Time to get fit - part one

It's getting to that time of year when people start thinking about there fitness. One of the first things you can do is get one of those apps that tracks the number of steps you take in a day. Your seven-day average is a good fitness indicator, here's why.

We've all got smart phones these days. And irrespective of whether it's running iOS or Android, you'll be able to get a steps tracking app.

10,000 is a magic number

There's a magic number of steps we should be aiming to achieve daily. 10,000 steps is that number.

The UK National Obesity Forum states that: "People who walk between 7,000 and 10,000 steps a day are moderately active".

I mean, thanks. Don’t spare the congratulations will you?

Walking 10,000 steps a day is not easy. Not because it’s hard to do physically, but time-wise it can be difficult. It works out for me to be around 5 miles of walking.

Fitness walking is not a casual stroll

There’s something else too. If you are fitness walking, then getting the miles in every day can be a challenge. It depends on your current fitness level.

So, if you are managing 10,000 steps a day according to your app, then you should start to feel the benefit. Again, it depends on what your fitness level was like to begin with. But getting the steps in is a good sign you’re on the way to improved fitness.

Be consistent

It’s no good being happy that you got 10,000 steps in today. And then having an extra doughnut.

You have to keep putting the 10,000 - daily. Or you do if you want to get fitter and lighter at the same time.

The steps counting apps can help you with that. They’ll track when you’ve got them done. They also track the fact that you haven’t. It can be a motivator when you are 1,000 steps short to pop out around the block to make sure you hit your 10,000.

Walk before you can run

You might be fit already. In which case, you can go running straight away.

You might be someone that hasn't exercised for quite a while. It's you I'm speaking to.

Once you get used to getting out there and build some fitness, you could start running.

Walking is a good way to build up to that. It'll help reduce the risk of injury and prepare you for something more intense later.

Choose an app

Google Fit is one such app that’ll track how many steps you’ve walked in a day. Or choose one of the many other steps counting apps and start using it to walk 10,000 steps minimum a day.

Remember, consistency is the key element.

If you are looking into 2018 and thinking it's time to get fit, counting your steps is a simple way to start. Aim for 10,000 a day and build up your fitness before switching to something more intense.
